cycling infrastructure

In the Netherlands, cycling is embedded in our way of life and our city planning. As a Dutch design office, thinking of infrastructure from the perspective of cyclists comes naturally to us. Whether it is about finding a way to create a grade level separated crossing, the ideal slope of a cycling ramp or how to design a comfortable cyclist bridge. The spatial integration of cycling infrastructure offers many challenges and we love standing up to them.
Furthermore, we can offer advice on various related issues, such as how to deal with bottlenecks and barriers or how to ensure cyclist safety.

We can also provide support to cites, communities and government institutions that are interested in building cycling infrastructure or a cycling network, but have no idea how and where to start.

large-scale cycle and pedestrian bridges

Cycle and pedestrian bridges are part of the public space. Therefore, a well-designed bridge can hugely improve the appearance and attractiveness of public space. At the same time, bridges fulfil a need within the existing bicycle and pedestrian network, people can get from A to B more easily. Our aim is to design well-functioning bridges on both fronts. Finding ways to fit a new bridge into its surroundings and the existing network is one of our specialities.

We focus on structural efficiency, honest use of materials and creating a timeless quality.
However, what characterises our bridges the most, is their slender appearance. We always aim for a structure that is as slim as possible, yet still structurally sound.

road bridges

For us, the challenge in designing a road bridge is to come up with something that is cost effective and structurally efficient, and has a sense of timeless beauty at the same time. There usually is less freedom of design compared to cycle and pedestrian bridges, but detailing, choice of material and structural design offer us plenty of opportunities to combine our design and engineering qualities and create a unique, inspiring bridge design.

feasibility and design studies

The construction of a new bridge or piece of infrastructure is usually preceded by a series of choices and decisions. One of our specialities is helping clients make these necessary choices by giving them insight into the various options and possibilities. That’s where feasibility and design studies come in.

First we analyse the requirements and desires. We then visualise the possible solutions, out of which we select the most interesting concepts together with the client. Those concepts are finalised and visualised. In addition, we write a report which offers insight in the possible choices and their influence and effect. This usually includes criteria such as costs, sustainability and building time, but can include any relevant items.

The subject of a feasibility or design study can vary from a cycling route or the most suitable bridge location to bridge types, construction material or a new layout for a busy intersection. If you would like to know whether your infrastructural dilemma is something that could become the subject of a feasibility study, please contact us.
